Cooler weather? Is Fall Here?

Well, last week we had some pretty cool weather here in Georgia – but now I’m hearing tomorrow’s temps will be back in the 90’s again! So much for fall right now I guess – but it will be here before you know it. Hey, did you know – it’s only a couple of months until Christmas!?!?! Where did 2012 go?

I’ve been busy this last week filling orders and making some poppers for my trip to the beach. Me fishing on the beach would be like taking ” Troutrageous! Mike  ” to the Redneck Games. Maybe we’d see Honey Boo Boo there? 🙂 We’ll see if I can actually catch anything on a spinning rod first, and maybe then try the poppers out in the back bays or something. Not sure I could work them very well in the surf from the beach!? I’d probably end up catching a bikini-fish, which might not be all bad, right? 😉

For your pre-Christmas shopping, we put up some poppers on eBay today. This is the second time I’ve tried it and although the first offering was well revieved on eBay, I have to admit to you that it was one of our regular customers that got the winning bid! He still got them for alot less than our normal price, though so I’m hoping he was happy with the winning bid amount!

Today the poppers are up to $2.50 but I expect that to change. When we list poppers on eBay, they are the same quality as the ones you buy directly from me. I’m just looking for new ways to sell a few poppers here and there. Esty didn’t work and we got no traffic from Pinterest. We’re not really equipped to do craft/art shows with them, besides the fact that I can hardly keep up with orders, much less get enough done that aren’t already sold to have any kind of inventory. We planned on trying a craft fair this spring, then this fall – and right now I still don’t have more than a half dozen poppers in inventory – and 4 of those are on eBay! 🙂 LOL

So anyway, have a great week everyone and place your bid on this 4 pack! You help us keep paying our bills and you can get great poppers for you or as a Christmas present! Now we just need the weather to go with Christmas! Whew! Where did I leave that glass of sweet tea?

They call me, Tater Salad. ???

Actually, his name is Fred.

I’m not exactly sure how we started calling him “Fred.” I had an uncle named Fred. Fred Flintstone? Drop Dead Fred? Remember that movie? Me neither. Yeah, not sure how he got that name…but that’s his name. He’s been watching me make poppers today and I think he’s looking at them like he’s hungry. Now, my wife is counting the days down until I finally break down and toss a trout fly in there attached to a pencil – LOL – but I’m not going to fish for him. Yet.

The Buy 3 Get 1 Free Deal is going on now and things are picking up once again, so I haven’t had much time to post anything anywhere in the last two weeks. I’ve been meaning to write a “how to” on fall popper fishing tactics, but honestly – I don’t think I’m going to get around to it this year. That’s not necessarily a bad thing though!

Fred is a bream from Lake Lanier. We’ve had him now for about two months. He’s learned to eat pellets and freeze dried worms, but he really has a good time when we splurge and buy him “ghost shrimp” or Tetras for a snack. I think he gets a little bored just eating the pellets and he seems to like to chase the shrimp and tetras around. Of course, we can’t do the tetras often because they’re like $2 each! The only real reason we’ve done it is to test the concept for vacation. I’m hoping to put about a half dozen in there with a “vacation feeder” thing and see him through the week. Not long now until I go get skunked in the salt.

Which reminds me! Holy cow! I wanted to make a couple of saltwater ZP’s to try down there….back to work!

Oh the waiting is the hardest part…

Remember that song? Some of you might, while I know of one dude that’s not old enough to remember it, unless he heard it on an “Oldies” channel! Time flies doesn’t it? That is, unless you’re waiting on your poppers! 🙂

Hard at work again today, I started a few for my trip to the salt next month and finished up the EMC ( Chikin!) poppers. Just have to get feathers on a dozen of those and they’ll be out the door.
Also, if you work for the Buncher Company – yours are ready and will go out this week, too!

Andrew and Michael, yours will be ready on Wed. or Thurs at the latest. You guys got were a few of the lucky Twitter/FB followers to get in on the Buy 3 Get 1 Free Deal!

For everyone else that’s saying “Hey, I didn’t see that!” there’s no reason to panic!:) lol

Next month we’re going to do the sale again – that’s right, the months of September and October are going to be Buy 3 Get 1 Free on standard Zazzy Pops of any kind. Special order/custom colors are still going to be $8 each, however – we are going to have a sale on the premium 3D-Snakeskin poppers too! They’ll be the price of Special Order poppers for the month of September! That’s SEVEN BUCK OFF – ONLY for September!

In other news of a purely unrelated nature…

Feesh Mor Chikin’

Like poppers on a turner, so are the Days of our…wait a second….this ain’t no soap opera. Most days. 🙂

Just an update today on a few exciting things coming down the Zazzy Pipeline in the very near future. I’m working on a “poppers in fall” article that will appear here shortly. Also, we’re reworking the numbers to see if there isn’t some way we can keep the price from increasing in 2013. Originally, costs were going to force me to go to $6 ea. but I’m trying hard to find ways to keep them at $5. $6 each – are you crazy? Well, no. Here’s our pricing structure….

We spend almost 50% of the total cost on body materials and epoxy(and related stuff like toothpicks, masks, tinfoil, stir sticks, etc.) Another 30% or so goes into shipping materials and ink markers used to color the poppers.  So that’s 30% profit, right? Well, unfortunately for us – not exactly. Ya see, I’m not including the actual labor that goes into making them. It’s a crazy move, but if I charged for the labor that goes into making each Zazzy Pop a unique piece of artwork ( even at the low prices art is going for these days) we’d have to charge you around $8 each for just the random Zazzy Pops.

You have to keep in mind that these aren’t just sprayed or dipped in paint -it takes that 10-15 minutes of painting, then a secret base coat to seal it that takes 2 hours to dry and only then can we add the epoxy, turn them for 2 more hours and then hang them to dry overnight. I found out pretty fast that making poppers is a much more labor intensive project than turning out egg flies or Elk Hair Caddis! 🙂

The goal as far as pricing was to keep them right there with the mass-produced poppers and other hobby popper makers and I think we’ve done that this year. Of course, being able to accomplish that is at the cost of any real profit, but we’re hoping that getting these poppers into as many hands as possible will help to grow our word-of-mouth referrals. That’s where you guys come in – and we thank you so much for telling your friends about us!

So anyway, I really think we are going to be able to keep them at $5.00 – or at worst $5.50 each this coming year. That’s one dollar or less than the mass produced poppers you can buy at the Big Box Stores and it’s right there in line with other popper makers in the Southeast. (Where, as you know all the best poppers are made! )

On a side note, please be aware that if buying Made in the USA is important to you – not every popper seller in the South is making their poppers here in the USA. One of the major sellers has their poppers made in China or Taiwan or some such. Here at Zazzy Pop, we’re not going to doodle around with any of that nonsense. 😉

So, let’s see….what else? How about a few photos?

The Coveted “Corner Office” view:

Poppers Drying:

The “Popper Mine” – needs something over the desk. That’s where I was going to put a piece of artwork made of old reels, but it never quite panned out. You can see Fred’s home on the right. He makes sure I stay on task unless he’s hungry and then it’s just bloodworms, bloodworms, bloodworms. –

and finally…ready for the SBC and epoxy…

Things we wished we’d done…

Time really does fly. Even on those days when it seems like 5 o’clock will never get here. 🙂

I’ve been wanting to branch out into other things with my art recently, but I can’t seem to stop painting poppers. That’s not all bad, but I’m not sure the popper audience will fully appreciate the context of whatever I produce. Not to sound like I’m painting the Mona Lisa over here or anything, but I think some of the designs come out pretty well – at least as far as fishing goes.

But could I produce something else? Something that takes the humble fishing popper to a new demographic – a new audience? Maybe. Maybe not. But I guess I’ll never get an answer to that question without producing a few unconventional sets and putting them out there – for sale – or to be criticized? My pen-pal friend from Down Under just got his Zazzy Pops the other day and he seems well pleased with how they turned out saying that they were quite the little works of art. It always makes me smile when someone says that, because I think back to my high school days. I think I took about as many art classes as I could squeeze in from 9th grade until I left college. In most of them, I was a stand out. No, not like that – when asked to paint a boot, I was the kid that painted everything around the boot, leaving the outline. Once I remember a watercolor class where I painted tribal figures using a spoon instead of a brush. Odd? Sure. Everyone thought I was nuts and maybe I am – but here I am, painting fishing lures…

…and I don’t think it’s nuts at all on most days. 😉

SO, in light of all that useless blathering, does anyone see anything they recognize below? This might seem a little crazy, but I’d hate to look back 30 years from now and say “Now why didn’t I ever paint up a tribute to my favorite artists?”

Three Zazzy Pops to the first person to correctly name each artist by Friday, August 3rd, 2012.  Bragging rights if you can also name the painting.  Good luck!
